When planning for a vacation, I like to choose three to four must-see locations or must-do activities, and then wing it for the rest. It's a pretty good approach, because I love having the freedom to alter my plans.

My partner is like me, which has made for some interesting experiences. We've ended up in military museums due to inclement weather, and faced a wall of photographers on a hike (they were waiting for an elusive migratory bird).

Once, we miscalculated the number of nights and ended up one night without accomodations. Not sure the backache from that particular business hotel was worth the price for the night, but I would vacation anywhere with my partner; he's always able to get me to see the funny side.

Not so funny is the run-up to the vacation.

I overthink, so I begin packing two weeks prior at minimum. I pack, repack, reconsider, finalize, and add on. My partner does his packing one night before the trip. This has led to us at one point having seven nail clippers from different cities, and having to use the abomination known as cinnamon-flavored toothpaste. I'm still not packing for him though. He's a grown man, he can learn his own lessons.

Otherwise, he can use cinnamon-flavored toothpaste again. That'll teach him.
